Sudan 1993: The Face of Truth

Image
The Little Child I was not born into a poor family, yet I became a victim of a famine in the middle of a war. Don't blame me neither blame my parents, they ran off earlier to secure a portion of food from the UN. I thought I could meet up but here I am, dying slowly as the worms eat through my intestines in hunger. Enemies in and out, this bird looks more fed than I do, I thought there was famine! I saw it look at me the same way I look at my mom's breasts when I am hungry. As I closed my eyes to a world I was just born into, I saw flashes. "Oh it's a well-fed man, when was the last time I saw one and why is his skin white?" He was my guardian angel, he chased away the enemy right after storing the memory in his 'black thing'. Today or tomorrow, death comes for Everyman. What famine failed to do, Malaria did years later. Here I am in my white walking towards the light disappointed. Most of what the living think they know are lies! The Vulture If you don

Angels at Work (a remake)

Image
Description An arrow piercing through a person's ears, the expression on her face shows a little sadness but not a scream or the expression expected from the face of someone going through such pain. Why? There are tiny caricature human figures in the background; some cutting off the arrow, some pulling it out, one was hit by the same arrow sharing the pain. There are other details that makes this piece African and others that captures non African-ness. Let's talk After three years, I decided to make this piece again in the ongoing series of works. I have been drawing on chip board and it has been very challenging, the fact that the paper is not white and I had to create my white highlights from materials like white gel pen and white pencil and do an abstract painting with pastel chalks on the background.  I am doing a number of things for the first time and all works in this series are imaginative which makes it harder puting my imaginations down on paper. In the first Five m

The Spoiler's Shoe

Image
Description Broken human bones crushed by a big shoe with a human figure trying to push it off and another trying to press it down the more. A human face revealed in the shoe shaped tear. Different shades of brown color depicting dirt (politics is said to be a dirty business). Discuss Most aftrican societies have a common challenge: corruption. Most of the blame have been credited to the political leaders over the years but in recent times, people have started considering the role of the common man in the problem that plagues our society: corruption. The upper class oppressing the lower class seem to be impossible in today's social setting without the cooperation of part of the people in the lower class. Fela Anikulapo once said, "it is bad when the whites oppress the blacks, but when the blacks oppress the blacks, that's worse." This is a remake of a sculpture I made in 2018 and it was made into drawing because this thought is still very much relevant and the truth

Hall of Fame

Image
I have been thinking and in my thoughts, I puzzled on fame . Description From top left; an illustration of friends drifting apart, two people fighting and the third minding his business, one climbing up the stairs of Fame and the other helping by pushing him up and hoping he would pull him up the moment he gets there.  From top right; an illustration of someone doing nothing but laying on the bed, one stabbing the other in conflict, and another who appears to have given up being tired of it all.  A human head which appears out of darkness and seems to be trapped in a box right at the center. Discuss In our society today, the struggle to 'blow' or be famous and rich is everywhere and everyone seems to be involved in a way or another. It is worthy of acknowledgement that some people are actually selfless in their hustle and they do not mind making sacrifices to help others up. But more apparently, people are turning against one another in the competition for fame. It is believe

AWO

Image
I spent the early weeks of the year 2021 engaging my mind. This piece reflects one of my thoughts. Description An illustration of three human figures joining heads in a meeting. One holds a gun, the other holds a flower and what the one at the center holds is not revealed. A human face emerges from the joining of their heads with bias light and sharpness features from on eye side to the other. The background appears to be an illustration of evening time in a desert area with a mountain relief in the distance. Discuss A Yoruba saying goes thus: "Awo níí gbawo nígbòwó, báwo o bá gbawo nígbòwó, awo a té, awo a ya."  It by interpretation means members of a cult or very close friends ought to be there to help each other. If they fail to, their friendship is ridiculed and will be destroyed. This saying captures the elements of trust and betrayal in friendship.  In my thoughts, I seek to find the truth about the possibilities of loyalty  and trust in friendship. Many times, the inte
